James Gibson, Ph.D., is the Director of the UCLA Office of Environment, Health and Safety, which is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of faculty, students and employees on campus. He is also the Executive Director of the UC Center for Laboratory Safety, whose mission is to sponsor and support research to improve laboratory safety. Prior to joining UCLA in 2008, he was the Director of Public Health for Princess Cruises, Cunard, Seabourn and Carnival Australia and worked closely with health ministries throughout the world. From 2000 to 2004, he served as Assistant Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health. Dr. Gibson has also worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Environmental Defense Fund. He received his M.A. in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and his Ph.D. in Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
