Tangential Flow Filtration System
Ideal for R&D scale microfiltration and ultrafiltration processing

The KrosFlo® Research IIi Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) System from Spectrum Labs is ideal for processing and monitoring filtration volumes ranging from 2 mL to 10 L. Whether maintaining a validated separation or characterizing a process for scale-up, the system can be combined with Spectrum’s KrosFlo Automatic Back Pressure Valve to control transmembrane pressure (TMP) and monitor process conditions in a wide range of TFF applications.

A Digital Pressure Monitor which displays feed, retentate, permeate and transmembrane pressures (TMP) is integrated into the peristaltic pump. The monitor is controlled by an embedded microcontroller, and uses a RS232 signal to control the valve’s set point TMP or permeate pressure.

The Back Pressure Valve opens or closes by pinching on the outside of the tubing (no fluid contact) to maintain a preset pressure. This reduces the chance of membrane fouling, minimizes operational support, and provides a uniform seiving coefficient within the hollow fiber module.

Dave Serway, VP of Business Development, Spectrum Labs, says, “Tangential flow filtration utilizing ready-to-use hollow fiber modules is scale-able. With the KRIIi system, TFF can be used to characterize a process at the bench scale that can then be easily implemented into a client’s production environment.”

Included with the system is KFComm Data Collection Software, which interfaces with a computer to download data in real-time and graphically display the process conditions.

When used with Spectrum’s hollow fiber filters, the system provides faster separation or concentration of proteins, cells, viruses, nano-particles and other macromolecules.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight: Simple Benchtop Titration
Flexible data export from titrators

Metrohm’s new 900 Touch Control device starts titrimetric analyses through the use of a touch screen. Smaller than a netbook, and powerful as a PC, the device measures 19 cm by 18 cm, and provides direct access to LIMS and network printers. An Ethernet interface also allows users to access the corporate intranet.

The brilliant color touch screen doesn’t need direct skin contact to function—it can be operated by a user wearing gloves. Up to 14 methods can be linked to “favorite” icons on the touch screen, and each user has direct access to his or her favorites with a single touch of an icon.

George Porter, Product Manager, Titration, at Metrohm, says the device allows for flexibility in the lab. “It allows more flexible data export from titrators,” he said. “And it’s a space saver, since it takes up a lot less space than a computer.”

The 900 Touch Control is compatible with all Titrando titrators and USB sample processors and meets FDA 21 CFR, Part 11 compliance. It also features an autostart function so that coulometric Karl-Fischer titrations are started automatically once a sample is added.

Absorbance Microplate Reader
Instantly capture full spectra for low volumes, microplates and cuvettes

The SPECTROstar Nano absorbance microplate reader from BMG LABTECH uses a proprietary spectrometer that can capture a full UV-Visible spectrum (220 to 1,000 nm) in less than one second per well, and measures sample volumes down to 2 μL.

An integrated cuvette port, which measures all standard microplate formats up to 1,536 wells, lets users analyze individual samples without the need to pre-program wavelengths.

Some of the most common absorbance assays, including ELISAs, DNA, RNA, Protein (Bradford, BCA, Lowry), cell growth, and beta-galactosidase can be read at the touch of a button due to predefined protocols. button due to predefined protocols.

SPECTROstar Nano’s built-in cuvette port, assigned for individual samples, can be used for kinetic studies and quick experiments. It also allows for single push-button operation for basic commands, as well as specific assay protocol set up.

EJ Dell, Business and Applications Development Scientist, BMG LABTECH, says the device’s durability makes it an essential instrument for any lab. “Being a solid-state detector with no moving parts, the spectrometer is highly durable,” he said. “It never needs to be retuned or recalibrated, thereby ensuring perfect measurements each time.”

Additional features include multimode shaking, incubation, kinetic readings, well scanning, automated path length correction and a gas vent.
