In 2003, the Human Genome Project was completed after 13 years of painstaking work and at a cost of nearly $3 billion. Today, a human genome can be sequenced in a matter of hours for close to $1,000. Advances in genome sequencing technologies over the past few decades have been the basis for significant progress in a range of fields, from precision medicine to evolutionary biology.
