SPME is a fast, solvent-less alternative to conventional sample extraction techniques. It’s ideal for the challenging sample matrices commonly encountered in many food laboratories. SPME is unique in that the extraction is fast and simple and can be done usually without solvents, and detection limits can reach parts per trillion (ppt) levels for certain compounds. The ability to use SPME in the headspace or by direct immersion into the sample makes it perfect for analysis of both liquid and solid samples.

As an attendee, you will:

  • Understand the basic concepts of SPME for sample prep in food analysis.
  • Discover a couple of applications where SPME shows advantages over other techniques.
  • Learn about the new over-coated SPME fibers for pesticide residue analysis in food samples.
  • Understand the unique features and advantages of SPME for preparing food samples for analysis.

Speaker

Bob Shirey is a Senior Research Scientist at Supelco. He received his BS degree in Chemistry from Shippensburg University and his MS degree in Biochemistry from West Virginia University. Bob started working at Supelco in 1984 focusing on GC and GC-MS applications. Eventually, Bob started to specialize in sample preparation and played a key role in the development of the VOCARB purge trap line. Since 1993, Bob’s primary responsibilities have been on the development of SPME fibers and hardware along with SPME applications. Bob has written multiple SPME journal articles and contributed chapters for several SPME books.
