Use the following decision tree to help narrow your equipment selection.
What type of laboratory balance do you require?
Precision Balances are those with a readability typically between 1 mg (0.001 g) and 1 g. Precision lab balances offer the widest range of weighing capacities with maximum capacities usually around 70,000 g.
Please choose one of the following capacity ranges.
1 - 500 g
This group of small capacity precision balances has a range between 1 g and 500 g
500 - 20,000 g
This group of precision balances has a capacity range between 1 g and 20,000 g. Most manufacturers offer a precision balance in this range.
20,000 - 70,000 g
Higher capacity precision balances with a weighing capacity of 20,000 g to 70,000 g. Most manufacturers offer a precision balance in this range.
Analytical balances are those with readability between 0.01 mg (0.00001 g) and 0.1 mg (0.0001 g). Analytical lab balances offer the second widest range of weighing capacities usually around 500 g.
Choose one of the following capacity ranges.
1 - 250 g
With a weighing capacity range of 1 to 250 g, this group of analytical balances will fit your needs for small analytical measurements. Analytical balances are some of the most common types in the lab, so you should find a large selection to choose from.
250 - 500 g
With a weighing capacity range of 250 to 500 g, this group of analytical balances will fit your needs for larger analytical measurements. Analytical balances are some of the most common types in the lab, so you should find a large selection to choose from.
Microbalances are those with a readability of 1µg (0.000001 g). Lab microbalances usually have a maximum capacity of approximately 50 g.
Choose one of the following capacity ranges.
0 - 25 g
A smaller weighing capacity range of 0 to 25 g represents the first grouping of microbalances. This small weight is required in order to obtain the high resolution a microbalance provides your lab. The selection of manufacturers to choose from is limited as only a few can produce such an outstandingly accurate balance.
25 - 50 g
A slightly larger weighing capacity range of 25 to 50 g represents this second grouping of microbalances. This small weight is required in order to obtain the high resolution a microbalance provides your lab. The selection of manufacturers to choose from is limited as only a few can produce such an outstandingly accurate balance.
Ultra-microbalances are those with a readability of 0.1 µg (0.0000001 g). Laboratory ultra-microbalances usually have a maximum capacity of approximately 5 g.
