Distek, Inc. has released BIOne Core Software, a cloud-hosted historian platform built exclusively for its BIOne Bioprocess Controllers. Delivered as a Software-as-a-Service solution, the platform centralizes live process trending, automated data logging, and device monitoring across all connected BIOne units from a single dashboard. The launch marks Distek's first dedicated software layer for the BIOne ecosystem and comes as the company celebrates 50 years of serving pharmaceutical laboratories worldwide.

What BIOne core software does, and who tt is designed for

BIOne Core is aimed at process development teams, academic research labs, and quality control environments running microbial or mammalian bioprocessing workflows on BIOne controllers. The platform operates through a lightweight local application, BIOne Connect, installed on a lab PC, which communicates with the controllers and routes data to secure cloud storage. That architecture keeps on-premise IT requirements minimal while preserving full data accessibility from any authorized connection point.

Key capabilities included at launch:

  • Live process trending: Visualize up to eight parameters per trend across all connected BIOne controllers, with adjustable timelines, overlays, and sampling intervals
  • Custom views: Create and save trend templates with configurable parameters, color themes, and axis controls for recurring process types
  • Automated data capture: Securely log all process data with full export functionality to support compliance workflows and integration with DOE or LIMS-based platforms
  • Device monitoring: View real-time status and performance of all connected BIOne controllers from a centralized dashboard
  • Integrated alarms and notes: Add annotations and alerts with complete audit trails and multi-level notifications
  • BIOne-focused UI: A familiar interface modeled after the BIOne platform, designed to minimize training and accelerate adoption

The interface design intentionally mirrors the BIOne controller experience. For labs already running BIOne 250 or BIOne 1250 systems, that continuity matters: staff who know the controller environment can transition to the software layer without a steep learning curve or retraining investment.

Cloud-based bioprocess data management and the IT overhead problem

The bioprocess automation and control software market has grown rapidly in recent years, valued at approximately $4.96 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $13.59 billion by 2032 at a compound annual growth rate of 13.7%. Much of that growth is driven by demand for connected, digitalized bioprocessing environments that support real-time monitoring, data traceability, and regulatory compliance. Yet a persistent friction point for smaller process development labs and academic research environments has been the cost and complexity of maintaining on-premise historian infrastructure alongside instrumentation.

As Lab Manager has reported, laboratories are in the midst of a major shift in how they handle data, with three interlocking trends defining modern lab informatics: breaking down data silos, adopting cloud-hosted platforms, and embracing FAIR data governance. BIOne Core addresses the first two of those directly. Generic historian tools often require significant configuration effort before they communicate reliably with a specific controller architecture, and instrument-specific software eliminates much of that mapping work because the data schema is already aligned.

Software solutions for pharma data management have increasingly prioritized LIMS integration and audit trail completeness as regulatory scrutiny on electronic records has grown. BIOne Core's export functionality and audit trail features position it to feed data into downstream LIMS or DOE platforms without requiring manual transcription, which is a common source of data integrity risk in smaller bioprocessing labs.

The SaaS delivery model also has pricing and maintenance implications worth considering. Labs avoid the capital and IT overhead of server infrastructure, and software updates are managed by Distek rather than internal IT teams. For academic research labs and smaller process development groups without dedicated informatics staff, that distinction matters.

Labs evaluating the platform will want to verify how the audit trail format aligns with any existing electronic records requirements, particularly if the environment is subject to FDA 21 CFR Part 11 or equivalent data integrity frameworks, since the press release does not specify Part 11 validation status and that is a reasonable question to raise during a demonstration.

For labs already running BIOne controllers, the integration pathway is designed to be immediate.
