Hidden Energy, Real Risk: The Case for Lockout/Tagout in Labs 

Here’s how to identify where LOTO applies and implement it without slowing work down

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is one of those safety practices that rarely gets attention in the laboratory, until something goes wrong. Yet in spaces with analyzers, centrifuges, automation lines, and specialty equipment, controlling hazardous energy is not just an industrial concern, it is a laboratory safety essential.

The hidden hazard in routine lab work

LOTO ensures equipment is shut off, isolated from energy sources, and cannot restart during servicing. These sources extend beyond electricity to include mechanical movement, compressed gases, hydraulic pressure, thermal energy, and stored energy. The goal is to prevent unexpected energization or release that could cause injury.

This matters especially because labs often exist in a gray area. They don’t always look like traditional industrial environments, yet they house complex equipment capable of causing serious harm. A laboratorian clearing a jammed centrifuge rotor, a service engineer working inside an analyzer, or a facilities technician addressing a clogged drain beneath automated equipment can all be exposed to hazardous energy. Without proper controls, a routine task can become a serious incident in seconds.

OSHA requires an energy control program when employees face hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance. While some laboratory devices may qualify for exceptions—particularly those that are cord-and-plug connected and under the exclusive control of the person performing the work—many do not. This is where lab managers need to be thoughtful and proactive. Assuming LOTO does not apply simply because “it’s a lab” is a mistake that can lead to injuries and citations.

More than compliance: A signal to your safety culture

Beyond compliance, LOTO plays a meaningful role in safety culture. When implemented well, it sends a clear message: no task is so urgent that it justifies bypassing safety controls. It reinforces accountability, communication, and respect for hazards that may not be immediately visible. It also encourages collaboration between departments. Laboratory staff, facilities teams, biomedical engineering, and vendor service personnel must all be aligned on expectations.

For lab managers, the key decisions begin with understanding where LOTO applies in their environment. Conduct practical risk assessment: Which pieces of equipment require servicing that exposes workers to internal components or energy sources? Who performs that work—lab staff, facilities, or vendors? Are there existing procedures, and are they specific to the equipment in use?

Training is another critical component. Employees must understand not only how to apply lockout/tagout devices, but when it is required. Too often, training is either overly generic or treated as a one-time event. Effective LOTO training should be tailored, reinforced regularly, and supported by clear, accessible procedures. Authorized employees require deeper competency than those working around locked-out equipment.

Documentation and standardization also matter. Written energy control procedures should be clear, concise, and usable in real-world situations. In many labs, developing equipment-specific procedures for high-risk devices is a practical and effective approach.

Finally, lab managers should consider how LOTO integrates with vendor activities. Service engineers may arrive with their own processes, but they are still operating within your facility. Expectations should be communicated in advance, and there should be a clear understanding of who is responsible for energy control during service events. This is an often-overlooked gap in laboratory safety programs.

From overlooked task to essential control

LOTO may not be highly visible, but it addresses some of the most serious risks in the lab. Done well, it protects employees and reflects a culture that prioritizes prevention over reaction.
