Complex microscopy images are worth more than a thousand words—they contain valuable information pertaining to cell morphology, function, and dynamic interactions and relationships between cells. Extracting this data with standard segmentation methods requires significant manual curation, which is time-consuming, subjective, and offers poor reproducibility. Aivia software is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to simplify image analysis, provide robust and reproducible segmentation results, and unlock all the value contained in the data. Accessible data analysis for biologists

Unlike many image analysis platforms that require computer science expertise, Aivia is designed to leverage biologists’ expertise. 

A trained biomedical scientist, has expert knowledge of a cell’s appearance but not necessarily how to enter the relevant parameters into software so it can detect and analyze the cells. As a result, many image analysis platforms require significant training and practice to ensure accurate results, which can prolong projects and delay publications.

As an AI-driven platform, Aivia allows scientists to perform parameter-free image segmentation, for faster, more efficient imaging projects. Aivia provides the scientist a paintbrush tool to outline cells of interest, and the software fills in all the relevant parameters based on this input to detect other cells of the same type. This approach harnesses the scientists’ expertise for segmentation, and dramatically reduces time spent inputting and finetuning parameters. 

Robust, reproducible results

Human beings—especially scientists—are good at creative thinking, integrating knowledge across multiple domains, and solving problems as opposed to performing mundane and repetitive tasks. Image processing is one such task where even the most diligent individual can become demotivated and begin to make mistakes, which reduces data quality and reproducibility. Performing these tasks manually also increases the risk of bias.

Fortunately, image processing is amenable to automation.
