Lab Manager Hosts Another Successful Lab Design Digital Summit

Leading experts discussed innovation, sustainability, and safety in lab design

MaryBeth DiDonna

Lab Manager recently held its second annual Lab Design Digital Summit on May 11-13, 2021. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis necessitated another digital event, where lab design experts delivered informative webinars to the Lab Manager audience covering topics related to innovation, sustainability, and safety in lab design.

The audience consisted of architects, engineers, planners, designers, equipment vendors, and laboratory management professionals, who attended this three-day series to learn about topics of interest related to lab design, engineering, and sustainable lab planning. Our speakers offered educational sessions on topics such as net zero labs, renewing brutalist-era lab buildings, lab planning that can keep up with scientific advancement, and safety concerns when renovating and expanding existing labs. Audience members were invited to participate in a Q&A session following each presentation, to ask our expert speakers for advice and insight to bring back to their own workplaces to enhance their lab design experience.

This digital event also featured presentations from the three winners of the second annual Lab Design Excellence Awards, a program established by Lab Manager to recognize and celebrate the best new and newly renovated projects within the lab design community. The three winning teams offered case studies of their groundbreaking lab facilities, and demonstrated why they are among the “best of the best.” Representatives from the project teams behind these three unique lab facilities described the planning process behind their respective buildings and the challenges they overcame to achieve these award-winning labs. The Science & Technology Building, University of South Carolina received Special Mention for Adaptive Reuse as part of the sustainability category; the Texas A&M University Global Health Research Complex took home the Excellence in Safety prize; and the University of Michigan Biological Sciences Building & Museum of Natural History was awarded Excellence in Innovation.
