With rotary evaporators in particular, there is a low risk of scalds or burns as a result of contact with the water bath or hot water and steam from the evaporation process. For this reason, users should always wear safety goggles or glasses as well as a lab coat and have heavy gloves within easy reach. Lab staff should also ensure they don’t overheat the water bath or its contents. In order to reduce the risk of a solvent fire, users should always keep organic solvents away from the evaporator’s electrical components and the water bath.
