A wide variety of techniques are available using DNA to definitively link a suspect to either a crime scene or a victim, elevating the use of genetic techniques from a niche science to standard practice for criminal investigations and court proceedings. These tools may be used to identify potential suspects, be used to identify victims of crime or disaster, to determine familial relationships, or to exonerate persons wrongly accused of crimes.
