Proficiency testing is a key part of food testing services, which helps to ensure the safety and quality of the food chain. The global market for food testing services is projected to grow from $13Bn in 2017 to $19Bn in five years. The growth is driven by increasing focus on food quality, stringent food safety regulations, advances in food testing technologies, and commercial availability of rapid screening tests. Europe represents the largest food testing market worldwide prompted by increasing consumer awareness over healthy food options, improvements in industrial hygiene standards in food processing, efforts of regulatory bodies to ensure safety, and authenticity of food products.

Annual retail volume growth in the key global wine markets plateaued in 2015. This, however, is an improvement on the decline in 2014 and 2013. The renaissance of Chinese wine is a key driver behind this improved performance, and wine sales are expected to grow by double-digits in Vietnam, Malaysia, and India. In mature European markets such as Italy and in North America, open-minded millennials (defined here as those who are legal drinking age up to 34 years old) are helping to shape very new wine drinking habits. This younger cohort has enthusiastically embraced sparkling wines, including but not restricted to Champagne. This means that Prosecco continues to expand its global reach, overtaking Champagne and now developing strongly in the U.S. This sweet tooth younger generation is also driving the fast growth of fruit-infused wines or sweeter wine-based mixes. It is predicted by research organization Technavio that the global wine market will grow steadily during the next four years and will reach a global consumption of more than 30 billion liters by 2020.

Though the aging population does not drink wine often, they buy more premium wine and wine manufacturers have started tapping into this segment by releasing wine in smaller packages or in packages that preserve wine better. Also, good grape harvests and exceptional weather conditions in the African region result in the production of wines with good acidity and sugar levels, which will also augment the market’s growth prospects.

Italy's wine market is forecast to grow at a low rate in both value and volume terms during 2015-2019.  Wine still has the highest volume share in Italy's wine market while the sparkling wine category is being forecasted to gain market share in value terms during 2015-2019, with hypermarkets and supermarkets leading the way in terms of distribution for all categories in the wine market. The growth of the sparkling wine market in Italy is being driven by consumers beginning to drink and buy sparkling wine throughout the year rather than at specific seasons and it is expected to continue growing offering more opportunities for sparkling wine producers. Tavernello is still the leading brand in the still wine category. Unlike other well-established sparkling markets—such as the UK and Germany—where Champagne, Cava, and Prosecco tend to dominate, the Italian sparkling wine market is a bit more fragmented due to the preponderance of numerous domestic products and their complex denomination of origin classification. There is an emergence of niche sparkling wine types which are gaining traction in the market, such as Durello from Veneto or Erbalude from Piedmont, however there are still many leading names driving the market like Prosecco, Asti, Franciacorta, Champagne, Lambrusco, Trento DOC, Pignoletto, and Alta Langa.

Prosecco is now so much a part of the national beverage repertoire it shows the highest penetration amongst annual sparkling wine drinkers. Prosecco and Lambrusco are the most frequently consumed sparkling types among Italian fizz drinkers and they are also perceived as offering the best value for money. In terms of quality perception, Champagne comes top, followed by Franciacorta. With the prospect of greater consumption of wine across a wider selection, Fapas are pleased to announce, working in partnership with Isvea srl (Italian wine laboratory) & StarEcotronics, additional wine proficiency tests for 2018, including red wine, white wine, and sparkling wine that will cover more than 50 analytes available from March 2018.
