Based on reports from the Wisconsin State Journal via NECN.com, the approval comes after complaints were lodged by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) about the cats being maltreated. However, the U.S. Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare said the issues raised painted an inaccurate picture of the actual condition of the cats.
The office stated that other than infections due to how ear coils, eye coils, and head caps were placed on the cats, the animals were cared for according to industry standards. The university also planned to change equipment sanitization procedures to deal with the infections.
However, PETA disputed the federal office's report and stated it plans to keep an eye on research involving cats at the university.
