Los Alamos looking to the future

As government funding for stockpile stewardship declines, a prominent national science laboratory is positioning itself for the future.

Los Alamos National Laboratory director Michael Anastasio and principal associate director in charge of science Terry Wallace recently called for the science staff there to help map the lab's profile for the next 20 years.

The plan will shape the physical structure and infrastructure of the lab, and affect $100 million in research and development grants annually.

A large portion of the country's weapons stockpile is scheduled to be dismantled, affecting LANL's stockpile stewardship program. As a result, Wallace said the lab needs to apply its skills to other problems of national security.
