BERLIN, Germany, (June 2, 2008) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announces that it will have a prominent presence at the 7th European Pesticides Residue Workshop (EPRW). The company will be showcasing its innovative instrumentation and hosting a seminar, featuring customer presentations. Thermo Fisher is the most comprehensive provider of solutions for demanding applications required by environmental and food safety laboratories, government organizations and regulatory agencies. Thermo Fisher supports environmental and food safety analysts by providing cutting edge analytical instrumentation for the detection of extremely low concentrations of pesticide residues in food and water supplies. This instrumentation will be exhibited at the Thermo Scientific booth 1 in the Foyer of the Estrel Convention Centre during EPRW 2008, Berlin, Germany, June 1-5.

Thermo Fisher will also host a discussion featuring industry leader Dr. Kurt-Peter Raezke, moderated by Dipankar Ghosh, Ph.D., strategic marketing manager for environmental and food safety, on Tuesday, June 3, 10:30-11:15 a.m. during the morning coffee break. Dr. Raezke will discuss the analysis of pesticide residues in food matrices. In addition, the company will also display several key posters and presentations focusing on innovative food and environmental safety technology, including the EQuan™ LC/MS environmental water testing system; H-SRM to reduce matrix interference in food residues; and multi-component pesticide analysis with GC-MS/MS.

Major technological innovations will be introduced in the booth during the exhibition.

The recent increase in public concern about the presence of harmful contaminants in the food chain has brought international attention to the regulatory issues regarding food and water contamination. Mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques are the emerging methods of choice for the identification and quantification of pesticide residues because of their sensitivity and reliability. Designed to meet the most demanding regulatory requirements, the Thermo Scientific instrumentation on display at EPRW includes the following:

The Thermo Scientific EQuan™ environmental water monitoring solution is designed for reliable and accurate analysis of water samples and specifically developed to monitor trace levels of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hormones, antibiotics and veterinary products. EQuan significantly reduces sample analysis time as it allows direct sample injections of up to 20 mL followed by immediate LC-MS/MS analysis. Limits of detection (LODs) are considerably improved compared to conventional injection techniques (up to 100 times) with detection limits of 10 ppt (parts per trillion) easily achieved.

The comprehensive Thermo Scientific solution — combining an Aria™ TLX system utilizing TurboFlow™ technology with the TSQ Series triple quadrupole mass spectrometers is optimized for online sample extraction. The Aria OS software controls all of the system functions including the ability to inject, transfer and elute analytes from the patented TurboFlow column in less than a minute. When samples are processed on Aria TLX systems, sample components that cause ion suppression are removed.

The Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum™ GC is a high-performance GC-MS/MS system designed for fast multi-component pesticide analysis. The instrument is the next evolution in GC triple quadrupoles, with unique features including Highly Selective Reaction Monitoring (H-SRM) for increased analyte selectivity in complex matrices, and Quantitation-Enhanced Data-Dependent™ MS/MS for simultaneous quantitation and structural confirmation. The TSQ Quantum GC is switchable between GC/MS and LC/MS modes.

The Thermo Scientific ITQ™ Series of GC-ion trap mass spectrometers with external ionization are fully upgradeable systems designed to provide high performance and high specificity. Developed for a wide range of applications, from routine GC/MS to research-grade ion trap MS, these new systems address the analytical needs of environmental and food safety industries. The cost-effective Thermo Scientific ITQ 700 GC/MS system combines full scan ion trap sensitivity with a small footprint for laboratories with limited space. The ITQ 700 has mass range of 700 amu, suitable for most environmental GC/MS applications. The Thermo Scientific ITQ 900 offers an extended mass range and the analytical flexibility of the Thermo Scientific TRACE GC Ultra™, while the Thermo Scientific ITQ 1100 is a fully-featured GC/MS system with MSn and new advanced scan functions as standard features, perfect for a full range of applications.
