Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has introduced the Nexis GC-2060 gas chromatograph, the latest evolution of its flagship GC platform, designed to improve uptime, streamline workflows, and enhance laboratory efficiency.

Announced from Columbia, Maryland, the new system supports both routine and evolving analyses across applications including energy, chemicals, food, environmental testing, and pharmaceuticals.

Designed to Maximize Uptime and Workflow Efficiency

Marking the 70th anniversary of Shimadzu Corporation’s development of Japan’s first gas chromatograph, the Nexis GC-2060 builds on decades of innovation with features tailored to modern laboratory demands.

The system integrates automation, simplified maintenance, and intelligent software to reduce downtime and improve usability for operators of all experience levels. Features such as one-touch injection unit access, tool-free column installation, and automated startup and shutdown help streamline daily operations.

Additionally, the platform includes on-demand support and troubleshooting alongside an intuitive software interface, helping labs maintain consistent performance and maximize uptime.

Advanced Detection and Injection Capabilities

The Nexis GC-2060 introduces several performance enhancements designed to improve analytical accuracy and flexibility:

  • Flame Ionization Detector (FID) with ~20% higher sensitivity and a minimum detection limit of 1.0 pgC/sec
  • World’s first multimode FID supporting Hy/Ox and Hy/Air gas configurations
  • Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) with a 25% improved detection limit and faster startup using single-filament technology
  • Multimode Injection (MMI) system supporting five injection techniques in a single module

These upgrades enable laboratories to perform a broader range of analyses using a single system, improving both efficiency and return on investment.

Sustainability and Smart Operation Features

A key addition to the Nexis GC-2060 is its Automatic Eco-Operation function, which learns from usage patterns to optimize performance and energy consumption.

The system automatically shifts to an energy-saving standby mode when not in use and provides visibility into gas and power savings, CO2 emissions reductions, and cost savings—supporting sustainability goals without compromising analytical performance.

Flexible Configuration for Diverse Lab Needs

Despite maintaining the same footprint as previous models, the Nexis GC-2060 offers enhanced expandability. Labs can increase the number of detectors, injection ports, and pretreatment units, enabling configurations such as dual-line parallel analysis and multi-application workflows on a single instrument.

This flexibility allows laboratories to adapt quickly to changing analytical requirements while maximizing space and resources.
