Sysmex America Introduces the XR-Series, a Next-Generation Hematology Solution for High-Complexity Labs

The XR-10 and XR-20 modules bring enhanced analytics, a new WBC differential reagent, and the optional WPC channel to high-complexity hematology labs, with XN-Series compatibility at the center of the transition story

Sysmex America, Inc. announced the introduction of the XR-Series, its next-generation hematology solution, on May 28, 2026. Built around the XR-10 Automated Hematology Module, the platform is designed for high-complexity clinical laboratories that need higher throughput and improved analytical confidence without disrupting established workflows. The XR-Series is available now.

Editor's Note: The hematology analyzer market sits at a rare intersection of clinical urgency and operational pressure. Complete blood counts are among the most ordered tests in clinical medicine, and the analyzers that run them are load-bearing infrastructure in any busy laboratory. When a successor platform to a widely adopted system arrives, the bar for lab managers is not just technical performance but transition risk, and how much of the existing workflow survives intact. What the XR-Series Adds Over the XN-Series

The XR-Series is the direct successor to the XN-Series, which has been one of the most widely adopted hematology platforms in clinical laboratories globally. Where the XN-Series uses two-dimensional fluorescence flow cytometry to characterize and differentiate cell populations, the XR-Series incorporates 3D scattergrams to enhance the identification and separation of blood cell populations. This additional dimension allows greater separation of cell clusters in the WDF scattergram without sacrificing accurate WBC differential flagging.

Enhancements in the new platform include:

  • A reformulated WBC differential reagent that improves cell cluster separation in the WDF channel
  • 3D scattergram visualization across analytical modules for improved result interpretation
  • The optional WPC channel on the XR-20 Automated Hematology Module, which provides specific flagging for suspect malignant and suspect reactive cells
  • Higher throughput and improved overall system performance across analytical configurations
  • The BT-50 barcode terminal, which reads barcodes, stores quality control materials in an integrated cooler, and manages automated transportation of QC and cleaning materials to connected modules on schedule

For existing Sysmex hematology users, the transition is designed to be seamless. The XR-Series maintains the familiar operation and user interface of the XN-Series and preserves its modular design, which means laboratories can adopt the platform quickly without retraining staff from the ground up.

The XR-9000 Configuration for High-Volume Environments

The XR-9000 is the high-volume, track-based configuration of the XR-Series, designed for laboratories processing large daily sample loads. It can integrate up to 24 XR-Series analytical modules in a single configuration, with throughput ranging from up to 550 samples per hour in a five-module setup to up to 1,000 samples per hour in larger configurations, depending on the arrangement of modules and peripheral equipment.

The XR-9000 is compatible with all major total laboratory automation (TLA) systems, which allows it to integrate into existing lab infrastructure without requiring a full automation overhaul. Peripheral integrations include the SP-50 slide preparation unit, the DI-60 automated digital imaging system, and the TS-10 tube sorter for labs with complex order profile combinations requiring dedicated routing and reflex testing lines.

The system reduces tube touchpoints and manual tasks through full automation, and its routing logic ensures analytical modules work in parallel rather than sequentially, which helps maintain throughput even when abnormal samples require additional processing steps.

Sysmex's Position in Hematology Diagnostics

Sysmex America is the Americas affiliate of Sysmex Corporation, headquartered in Kobe, Japan and founded in 1968. Sysmex Corporation holds an estimated 50 to 60 percent global market share in hematology analyzers and reagents, making it the largest single player in a segment valued at approximately $5.8 billion in 2025. The XR-Series received FDA 510(k) clearance in June 2025, clearing the path for the U.S. commercial launch announced this week.

A peer-reviewed performance evaluation of the XR-9000 published in the Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation in April 2026 found strong agreement with the XN-9100 across the main CBC and differential parameters, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.983, and concluded the system demonstrated reliable performance meeting clinical requirements for accurate diagnosis and monitoring.

The hematology analyzer market is growing steadily, driven by rising prevalence of blood disorders, increasing demand for total laboratory automation, and pressure on clinical labs to reduce turnaround time and manual review rates without adding headcount. For lab managers evaluating capital equipment decisions, the XR-Series' compatibility with existing Sysmex infrastructure and established XN-Series workflows is the most operationally significant aspect of this launch.
