Thermo Fisher Scientific used the 2026 American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference to unveil a significant expansion of its Orbitrap portfolio, introducing three new mass spectrometer platforms, a suite of AI-enabled software tools, and end-to-end workflows spanning proteomics research, biopharmaceutical development, and regulated environmental and food safety testing.
The announcement reflects a deliberate push to extend the resolving power that has made Orbitrap technology a cornerstone of discovery research into settings where throughput, regulatory compliance, and cost-per-sample matter as much as raw analytical performance. The global mass spectrometry market was valued at approximately $6.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $10.65 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of around 8%, driven by demand across pharmaceutical R&D, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.

Three new platforms target distinct scientific challenges
The three new Orbitrap instruments span fundamentally different use cases, which is itself significant. Rather than iterating on a single product line, Thermo Fisher is addressing three distinct laboratory settings with tailored platforms.
Orbitrap Tribrid Apex MS: research and multiomics
The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Tribrid Apex Mass Spectrometer is positioned as the company's most versatile and highest-performing Orbitrap Tribrid to date, consolidating three mass analyzers, a new infrared laser option for alternative fragmentation, and Direct Mass Technology Mode on a single platform. According to a companion Thermo Fisher announcement, the system delivers five times greater sensitivity and results up to four times faster than previous-generation instruments, with up to 100% sequence coverage achievable in a single experiment. The system supports more than 300 areas of research and is designed to give researchers clearer answers from complex biology earlier in the discovery process.
Orbitrap Excedion MS: biopharma drug development
The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Excedion Mass Spectrometer is built to reduce performance tradeoffs common in drug development workflows, covering applications from drug metabolism studies to oligonucleotide and peptide analysis. Its enhanced dynamic range (eDR) technology detects three to five times more compounds in complex samples, and the system delivers more reproducible results across larger studies. A notable commercial feature is a field-upgradeable path: for the first time, laboratories can upgrade to the Orbitrap Excedion Pro MS without replacing the instrument, expanding analytical capability while limiting downtime and capital outlay.
Orbitrap Exploris GC S MS: environmental and food safety
For regulated environmental and food safety testing, the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris GC S Mass Spectrometer brings high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to dioxin and persistent organic pollutant (POP) analysis. With more than twice the resolution of many existing systems, it can identify emerging contaminants without requiring additional instruments, which matters in high-throughput public health and environmental testing laboratories where complexity and instrument count are both under pressure.
The company will also showcase the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX Mass Detector for high-resolution PFAS, pesticide, and related contaminant screening, alongside the TSQ Altis Plus EFOX Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for high-throughput quantitation in the same applied testing environments.

AI-enabled software and two new acquisitions strengthen the data layer
Hardware announcements alone rarely define an ASMS showing these days, and Thermo Fisher's software strategy at ASMS 2026 is equally significant. The company introduced several new software tools while also formally integrating two recent acquisitions into its proteomics stack.
MSAID and Proteinaceous, both described as recent Thermo Fisher software acquisitions, bring complementary capabilities to the platform. MSAID contributes AI-driven proteomics and machine learning expertise, while Proteinaceous adds top-down and native mass spectrometry bioinformatics. Together, they are intended to speed analysis, streamline connectivity, and help scientists interpret complex datasets with greater confidence.
Three additional software tools round out the AI layer:
- Thermo Scientific Proteoform Studio Software delivers a streamlined proteomics workflow from data acquisition through reporting, including Direct Mass Technology analysis for deeper proteoform characterization.

For lab managers overseeing proteomics and LC-MS workflows, the integration of AI-assisted spectral interpretation represents a meaningful operational shift. End-to-end biopharma workflows extend beyond the mass spectrometer
The biopharma section of the announcement goes beyond the Excedion MS itself, with Thermo Fisher presenting a ready-made, end-to-end workflow for biopharmaceutical development labs. Several complementary products contribute:
- Thermo Scientific Vanquish Amplify UHPLC Systems use an inert, metal-free sample flow path engineered to minimize adsorption and secondary interactions, helping scientists analyze sensitive biological molecules such as short oligonucleotides with less sample loss and better reproducibility from method development through QC.

For later-stage regulated bioanalysis and QA/QC, Thermo Fisher is also showcasing the Thermo Scientific TSQ Certis Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, which accelerates drug development by measuring samples 15% faster and running more than twice as long between maintenance events for complex matrices such as plasma.
What this means for labs across application areas
Orbitrap technology's origins are in discovery research, where sensitivity and resolution matter more than throughput or cost-per-sample. Mass spectrometry's role across analytical chemistry now spans proteomics, environmental analysis, drug discovery, and food safety testing, and each of those contexts carries different operational priorities.
The Exploris GC S and the EFOX systems mark the most explicit move into regulated applied testing markets. Dioxin and POP analysis is a technically demanding, compliance-driven application that has historically relied on sector-field high-resolution instruments. Bringing Orbitrap technology to that workflow, with the claim of twice the resolution of many existing systems, is a competitive positioning play in a market where regulatory requirements set the performance floor.
The field-upgrade path on the Excedion MS is also worth noting for biopharma lab managers managing capital budgets. An instrument purchase that can grow into expanded capability without replacement addresses one of the persistent friction points in laboratory technology adoption: the fear that buying today means being left behind when the next generation arrives.
