Thermo Fisher Kicks Off 2026 with New Instruments, AI Push, and a Warning on Rising Lab Costs

From a next-gen cryo-EM to a smarter electronic pipette, the company's Q1 earnings call painted a detailed picture of where lab technology is heading — and what's putting pressure on budgets.

Thermo Fisher Scientific's first-quarter earnings call this week was notable not just for what it said about the company's finances, but for what it revealed about the direction of laboratory technology in 2026. CEO Marc Casper spent considerable time on new product launches, the deepening role of AI in scientific instrumentation, and the supply chain pressures that are beginning to work their way through the lab supply chain.

For lab managers, those details matter more than the revenue figures. Here's what's relevant to the bench.


A Wave of New Instruments

Thermo Fisher launched several new instruments in Q1 that span the range from high-end structural biology to everyday bench work.

The headline introduction was the Thermo Scientific Glacios 3 Cryo-TEM. The next-generation 200 kV cryogenic transmission electron microscope features AI-enabled workflows and a built-in READY™ System that dramatically reduces the facility renovation requirements that have historically kept cryo-EM out of reach for many labs. Casper described it as "democratizing" access to structural biology. According to Thermo Fisher, the READY System would have eliminated the need for facility renovations at 80–95% of sites it has surveyed for electron microscopy installations over the past decade.

In mass spectrometry, Thermo launched the TSQ Certis Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, designed to deliver faster, more reliable quantitative results for pharmaceutical and applied market customers. Built around rugged hardware, predictive maintenance, and compliance-ready software, it targets labs that need routine high-quality data without the complexity of a high-end research platform. For industrial and applied labs, the new Niton XL5e Handheld XRF Analyzer enables rapid, field-based elemental identification. Casper highlighted it as a tool that helps customers "identify materials in the field, helping to drive productivity and speed decision-making" without returning samples to a central lab.

Rounding out the quarter, Thermo introduced the FluidEase Pro ClipTip Electronic Pipette, aimed at improving precision and reliability in everyday liquid handling. It won't generate headlines, but it's the kind of instrument that has a practical impact for bench scientists doing high-volume pipetting day in and day out.


AI Is Moving From Buzzword to Infrastructure

Perhaps the most forward-looking theme in the earnings call was the scope and seriousness of Thermo Fisher's AI ambitions — and what those might eventually mean for how labs operate.

Earlier in the year, the company announced a strategic collaboration with Nvidia, with the stated goal of developing new workflow solutions that help scientists work faster, improve accuracy, and get more value from each experiment.

More broadly, Casper described a shift he's observing in how some customers are using instrumentation altogether. Rather than running targeted experiments in a specific area of interest, a growing number of facilities are running experiments at a massive scale specifically to generate biological data for AI model training — a trend that is already reshaping laboratory workflows in 2026.

"You're seeing very wide-scale, large volume labs that are just trying to build biology models," Casper said on the call. "Those customers want the instruments to be more automated or more automated-ready, and they want it to be easy to effectively have the data be able to populate their own models."

He described this as a trend Thermo Fisher has tracked for years — long before generative AI — and said the company's R&D roadmap is actively building toward better instrument connectivity and data integration as a result.

The company also opened a new cryo-EM drug discovery center in San Francisco during the quarter, giving pharma and biotech customers hands-on access to its advanced cryo-EM technologies to support drug development work.


Supply Chain and Tariff Costs Are Climbing

The part of the earnings call most directly relevant to lab budgets was CFO Jim Meyer's candid discussion of cost pressures. Tariffs and foreign exchange headwinds reduced operating margins by approximately 80 basis points in Q1 compared to the prior year — a material impact for a company of this scale.

Meyer identified logistics and transportation costs as the area where inflationary pressure is showing up first, with teams actively working to offset the impact. But he was frank about the uncertainty:

"Given the daily variability in oil prices, we felt it appropriate to put a placeholder in the guide for future quarters for the risk of inflation that we aren't fully able to mitigate within a year."

For lab managers, this is a meaningful signal. When a supplier of Thermo Fisher's scale is publicly disclosing it can't guarantee full mitigation of logistics inflation, labs that rely on just-in-time consumables ordering or haven't revisited supply agreements recently should take note. Academic and Government Labs: Slowly Improving

For labs operating in university or government-funded settings, Thermo Fisher's characterization of that end market offers useful context. Revenue in the academic and government segment declined by low single digits in Q1, driven by what the company described as muted macro conditions in both the U.S. and China. Instrument demand was particularly soft.

Casper acknowledged the funding environment remains below normalized levels, but offered a cautiously optimistic read: the passage of the federal budget in late January helped, and funding flows "improved during the quarter." His working assumption for the rest of 2026 is gradual stabilization — not a snapback, but not further deterioration either.

For labs that have been holding off on capital equipment purchases pending a clearer funding picture, that characterization may offer enough signal to begin moving forward on deferred decisions. Casper also pointed to ASMS in June as a venue for additional instrument announcements from the analytical instruments portfolio.


What's Ahead

Thermo Fisher raised its full-year revenue guidance to a range of $47.3–$48.1 billion, with adjusted EPS guidance of $24.64–$25.12 for the year. The company will host an Investor Day on the morning of May 20th, where Casper indicated additional product strategy and AI roadmap details will be disclosed.

Given how much ground the earnings call covered on instrumentation, connectivity, and AI integration, that event is likely to include details relevant to lab technology planning — not just investor modeling.

In the meantime, the instruments are on the market, the AI integrations are being built into next-generation platforms, and the cost environment is getting more complex. All three deserve a place in lab planning conversations for the rest of 2026.
