The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been recognized by the Denver Post as a “2013 Top Work Place.” NREL is one of only 15 large Denver-area employers selected this year.
“I am very gratified that we were nominated by one of our employees for this award,” NREL Director Dan Arvizu said. “The fact that 75% of our staff voluntarily took part in an independent survey signifies how passionate they are about the work we do.”

Creating an Environment of Success course
The survey covered three areas: organizational health, job satisfaction and engagement. Questions were asked about NREL's strategic direction, leadership, values, and execution, as well as individual job satisfaction. NREL was also ranked on how meaningful it is to work at the laboratory and how engaged it is in its mission. The results of the survey led to NREL’s selection as a Top Work Place.
NREL’s staff includes nearly 1,700 regular employees and more than 1,000 visiting researchers, contractors and student interns. A recent study by the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business noted that NREL is one of Jefferson County’s largest employers and it is where half of NREL’s employees live. As a result, the county sees an economic impact of nearly $274.6 million per year and the lab’s overall impact to Colorado’s economy was $814.8 million in fiscal year 2012.
