Managing Big Data

Platform Provides Critical Tools for Handling Research Collabortion Networks

At the end of May 2013, Accelrys, Inc. announced its Enterprise Platform 9.0, an open, scientifically aware platform which delivers breakthrough capabilities for managing “Big Data” and externalized research collaboration networks.

“Our customers across industries have more scientific data to help them innovate than ever before, yet their ability to efficiently transform that data into knowledge is limited by tools and processes that fail to take an integrated, holistic approach to new product development,” said Accelrys president and chief executive officer Max Carnecchia.

In order to solve those issues, the latest version of the platform features new technology enhancements in the areas of security, administration and scientific services and provides “powerful new tools for streamlining the lab-to-commercialization value chain within and outside of the firewall and driving innovation in new product development,” the company added.

In terms of Big Data, the platform allows users to access large volumes of data across an enterprise with the Accelrys Query Service, Accelrys Direct and various database and file connectors. Users can then utilize the platform’s broad scientific Collections—which are capable of handling structured and unstructured data, biological sequences, chemical structures, images and text—to perform calculations that analyze and process that data.

Among reporting capabilities and other improvements to deal with Big Data, Enterprise also includes tools for externalized collaboration and scientific services and chemistry harmonization.

Colorful Containers

Fluorescent products for sample processing reduce errors and help labs work smarter

New products for sample processing and handling from BioCision not only bring further organization to laboratories, they also add some color to the workplace.

The new line of products, which come in four main colors—purple, green, orange, and pink—make it easier for labs to process and handle similar samples and then find those samples when they’re needed. Labs can develop protocols based on color so that any scientist in the lab is able to easily find a sample.

Michelle Nemits, BioCision's vice president of sales and business development, said customers love the new colors, with one telling the company, “I’m going to make my lab all pink so no one will take my stuff.” Others said the colors make sample identification in the lab easier, are a nice change from gray or beige, and are easier to spot in a frosty freezer.

Products available in colors include three models of BioCision’s CoolCell® cell freezing device, four models of CoolBox™ cryostorage containers, five sizes of TruCool® ice pans and buckets, the CoolRack® M6 thermo-conductive microcentrifuge tube module, and CoolRack® Sleeves.

Apart from the colors, those products have several other perks.

“The BioCision product lines … address common (often over-looked) problems in current laboratory sample handling and processing practices for temperature-sensitive samples,” Nemits said. For example, she explained, CoolCell cell freezing containers provide a controlled –1C/minute freeze rate when freezing down cells in a –80C freezer—without the use of isopropanol or any fluids.

She added that CoolBox ice-free cooling systems and CoolRack thermo-conductive sample modules provide uniform and reproducible sample cooling, freezing or warming without ice, batteries or electricity.

“Conventional practice is to place samples directly into ice, which is fraught with contamination risk and uneven cooling, or to use gel-filled cooling devices that have variable well-to-well cooling,” Nemits said.
