The Role of Water in Laboratory Accuracy

A guide to understanding purity standards and minimizing water-related variability

Written byMilliporeSigma andLab Manager

The margin for error in the lab is small, and the source of that error is often hard to pinpoint. In many cases, it begins with water. Trace levels of ionic, organic, particulate, or biological contaminants can interfere with measurements and compromise instrument performance. The first step in mitigating these risks is determining the required purity level for your workflows. Water that is too impure can lead to inaccuracies, while unnecessarily high purity increases operational costs and energy use.

The next challenge lies in how purified water is handled and how the purification system is maintained. Factors such as storing water in unsuitable containers or for extended periods, or delaying cartridge replacements, can allow contaminants to accumulate. Regular system maintenance and mindful handling ensure that purified water remains within specifications and that the system continues to perform reliably over time.

This resource guide explores the factors that influence water quality from production to the point of use. It outlines how to match purity levels to application and regulatory requirements, identify contaminant entry points, and strengthen monitoring and maintenance practices. Readers will also find insights into the relationship between water quality and analytical accuracy, with a focus on sensitive analyses such as PFAS detection by LC-MS.
