Volumes have been written about how to foster a culture of innovation across various types of business and institutional sectors. Innovation is uniquely fundamental to the mission of scientific research and engineering organizations. Six conditions empower a culture of innovation: authenticity, autonomy, curiosity, imagination, thrill, and hope.
With the attention required to technical issues and to laboratory safety during the typical laboratory facilities planning process, the resulting spaces can fail to support the ideal conditions for innovation to occur. Is this inevitable? What if we could do better? How could the physical attributes of tomorrow’s laboratory workspace be improved to encourage ideal conditions for human occupants?
Collaboration is also necessary for innovation. The National Academy of Sciences recently noted that “teams are increasingly prevalent across virtually all fields of science and patenting.” Successful collaborations require “camaraderie,” but how can the scientific workplace support collaboration and foster camaraderie in today’s shifting hybrid world?
This session will review all six conditions for innovation, focus on those aspects that are most closely tied to the physical laboratory workspace, and outline how to effectively collaborate with the research institution’s lab manager to successfully provide the conditions for the users. This is possible with good project planning and a thorough ideation phase for the project.
