Identifying the molecular composition of microplastics helps researchers identify materials that contribute to the presence of these particles in our oceans, potable water, and food supplies. The polymers present are easily identified using FT-IR spectroscopy, but until recently, samples had to be collected and returned to a central lab for analysis.
