The Association for Laboratory Automation (ALA) has announced an education based addition to the already strong collaboration with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The partnership focuses on student research involving the impact of chemical engineering on the science and technologies of laboratory automation.

According to ALA President Erik Rubin, Ph.D., by expanding its partnership with AIChE to include the ALA Young Scientist Poster Award, ALA increases its efforts to advance its educational mission and fulfill its strategic initiatives of cultivating student involvement across multiple industries.

The winner of the ALA Young Scientists Poster Award at the AIChE annual meeting receives $500.00 (USD) and will be featured in ALA’s award-winning, wiki: LabAutopedia. Additionally the winning student will present his/her scientific poster at ALA’s annual conference and exhibition LabAutomation2010, January 23-27, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Palm Springs, CA. The AIChE Annual Meeting is set for November 8-13, 2009 in Nashville, TN, USA.

“In continuing to collaborate with AIChE, we are advancing both organizations’ educational missions and growing support of students involved in chemical engineering and laboratory automation,” said Rubin. “We take great pride in these enhanced initiatives that aim to recognize and promote the exceptional research of young scientists and chemical engineers.”

AIChE Executive Director June Wispelwey thanked ALA for its participation in AIChE’s meeting, emphasizing the groups’ shared commitments to students and young professionals in chemical and biological engineering. “Our young engineers face large and exciting challenges, especially with the role they can play in developing innovative solutions to energy, environmental and healthcare challenges. The work displayed at this meeting demonstrates the significant research skills these young people will bring to bear in meeting these challenges.”
