A June 6 article in the University World News on Meek's talk at last month's opening session of the RHEDI Executive Leadership Programme held in Durban, South Africa highlighted that, globally, research management has become more specialized and professionalized. However, Meek also stated that that doesn't mean balance isn't needed in managing research.
“There is a danger of over-managing the research function,” Meek said at the talk, as quoted by the University World News.

Some of the main challenges facing research management are the focus on return on investment by governments investing in research in their countries and the risk of universities "overselling" their role in the knowledge economy. Competition among universities to be world-class was another issue raised at the event, one that according to Meek has "no simple answer" because of limited resources.
