GE Healthcare has opened voting for its annual IN Cell Image Competition at www.gelifesciences.com/incellcompetition. Voters are invited to choose their favorite from a shortlist of 30 beautiful images generated by scientists from around the world using the IN Cell Analyzer system. The shortlist was selected in November from more than 80 entries by an expert scientific panel of judges. Voting is open until January 5th 2009. Attendees at the Cambridge Health Institute HCA conference in San Francisco will also get an opportunity to view the images and vote for their favorite.
On January 8th, the votes will be counted and three winners will be selected: one from North America, one from Europe and one from Asia. Each winner wins a trip to New York City where their images will be shown on NBC’s high-definition TV screen in Times Square. The competition is supported by BioTechniques.
The IN Cell Analyzer is a High Content Analysis (HCA) system, which is used to study cellular processes in their true biological context. The images generated by the system are used for both research and drug discovery and they cover a wide range of applications including cancer, neurology, cardiology, drug development, diabetes, obesity, immunology and dermatology.
One of last year’s IN Cell Competition winners,Kymmy Lorrain of Brain Cells Inc., US, produced an image of human cortical neural stem cells from a study regarding depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Kymmy Lorrain said: “The competition is a great way to see what other people using the IN Cell Analyzer are doing within their respective fields. My entire company was ecstatic about the fact that our image was shown in Times Square.”
