Introduction to the Wafting Technique

When working in a laboratory setting, there are times when identifying the smell of a chemical can be useful, such as verifying the presence of a specific substance. However, directly inhaling chemical fumes can be hazardous and may cause irritation or damage to your respiratory system. To safely detect the odor of a chemical, the wafting technique is employed, a method that reduces your exposure to potentially harmful substances.

What Is the Wafting Technique?

The wafting technique is a method used by laboratory professionals to safely detect the smell of a chemical without directly inhaling it. Instead of placing your nose near the container, which could expose you to toxic or concentrated vapors, you use your hand to gently fan the vapors towards your nose. This method minimizes the risk of inhalation while still allowing you to gather information about the chemical.
