Evolving with the needs of modern laboratory leadership
Lab Manager is known for its dedicated focus on all aspects of laboratory operations—from health and safety to leadership, sustainability, lab quality, and business management, among other topics.
Reflecting on the brand's founding mission, Bob Kafato, president of LabX Media Group, shares that the vision behind Lab Manager was always clear: to help labs save money, improve efficiency, manage staff effectively, adopt innovative practices, and discover the right products to achieve these goals.
As the needs of laboratory professionals have evolved, so has Lab Manager. Trevor Henderson, creative services director at Lab Manager, reflects on the brand’s journey: “I'm very pleased to be a part of the journey that Lab Manager has been on for the past two decades,” he says. “As a brand, Lab Manager has embraced digital transformation, expanded its content strategy, introduced new, dynamic products, and adapted to the ever-changing needs of our audience—all while staying true to the mission of helping lab managers ‘run their labs like a business.’"
Equipping lab leaders with the right tools and skills
Today, Lab Manager distributes its print publication eight times per year to 36,000 subscribers, generates more than two million website sessions annually, hosts monthly webinars and digital events, and leads the Lab Manager Leadership Summit, which celebrates its fifth year in 2025.
To further support professional development, Lab Manager launched Lab Manager Academy in 2021, an eLearning platform designed by lab managers for lab managers. Offering more than 40 courses and 10 certificate programs, the Academy covers critical topics in leadership, safety, operations, and technical management, with new courses introduced each year.
Building a community of leaders
The true impact of Lab Manager is best reflected in the experiences of its readers. Dwayne Henry, a long-time subscriber, credits the publication with shaping his career as a laboratory leader: “Lab Manager became my mentor because I didn’t have anyone else to consult with to find out how I am supposed to do this role.” Now, Henry says, “Lab Manager is deeply integrated into our lab’s processes and our setups.”
As Lab Manager celebrates this milestone, the brand remains committed to empowering the next generation of lab leaders.
“As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we recognize that the role of laboratory leadership is expanding. Labs don’t just need great managers; they need visionary leaders at all levels. That’s why we see Lab Manager evolving as well,” says Ken Piech, executive vice president of Lab Manager. “While our core mission remains, we also recognize that leadership is not just about what you know, but about the community you build. That’s why we’re investing more in face-to-face opportunities, like expanding our in-person Leadership Summit, to ensure lab managers can connect, share, and grow together.”
