New York University's (NYU) new Masters in Professional Writing may be a program worth checking out for lab managers and scientists as it will include a component on writing for science and the environment. The program will also offer a course on writing proposals and grants, something that's becoming increasingly important in today's tough funding environment in the sciences.
Learning takes place in a convenient online environment. Full-time and part-time students earn 36 credits by completing a rigorous program of study and by engaging in an onsite internship or directed study. They also build an e-portfolio of their best work that is supplemented by an academic thesis. All facets of the program promote the latest technological applications of professional writing. The goal is to position students not only for today's career challenges, but also for those that are emerging in digital media, business and organizational writing, document design and media presentation, information architecture, writing for the health professions, promotional writing, writing for finance, technical writing, writing for science and the environment, proposals and grants, and more.
