OHAUS EXPLORER™ BALANCES

Minimizing result uncertainty by OHAUS

by OHAUS

The adage "garbage in, garbage out" applies to every scientific endeavor from computer science to microbiology; conclusions can only be as good as the data used to reach them. This is widely recognized in most labs, in fact several organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or United States Pharmacopeia (USP) have created standards by which all aspects of the data generation process are governed. The lab balance is one of the most ubiquitous—and potentially most overlooked—analytical instruments used to generate data. OHAUS Explorer balances provide numerous features that help minimize weighing uncertainty, and are available at an economical price point.

WEIGHING PERFORMANCE

All measurement devices are subject to measurement uncertainty—the degree to which a measured value and the true value could potentially differ. It is a common mistake to assume that the readability of a balance (the least significant digit that a balance can display) reflects the accuracy of a balance; this is absolutely not the case. OHAUS Explorer balances offer exceptional weighing performance and provide results with minimal uncertainty.

CONNECTIVITY & DATA INTEGRITY

Once data is generated it must be recorded and archived. A balance can be a stand-alone piece of equipment connected to a printer to record data. It may also be connected to a PC, or a larger system such as a commercial LIMS, or an internal local area network. OHAUS Explorer balances provide several connectivity options such as RS-232, USB, and Ethernet. Once connected, weighing results can be automatically collected and stored in a digital format (spreadsheets, databases, etc.) along with attributes which allow traceability such as a date and time stamp, identification of the balance from which it came, the user who made the measurement, sample id, etc. OHAUS' standard communication protocol and response format makes collecting and storing data easy.

AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION

It is important to account for factors like temperature and humidity to ensure consistent results. OHAUS Explorer balances feature an internal mechanism for automatic calibration called AutoCal™. When the balance is not in use, AutoCal will automatically trigger an internal calibration and adjustment when a change of temperature is detected or after a given period of time. AutoCal guarantees that the balance is adjusted to produce accurate results in the current environment and that the balance is always ready for use. It also eliminates the need for manual calibration and adjustment. OHAUS' Explorer series of semi-micro, analytical, precision, and high-capacity balances are durably constructed and offer capacities up to 35 kg, and readabilities from 0.01mg to 0.1g. They well suited for laboratory applications where high accuracy, data integrity, and minimal result uncertainty are paramount.
