Immunoassays may be used to identify a class of drugs; however they often lack the sensitivity required to detect semi-synthetic and synthetic opioids. Gas or liquid chromatography paired with mass spectrometry offers greater sensitivity and enables forensic toxicologists to detect unknown compounds in samples.
