Groundbreaking observations could help develop better, more efficient materials for electronics and alternative energy

Phosphorus, a highly reactive element commonly found in match heads, tracer bullets, and fertilizers, can be turned into a stable crystalline form known as black phosphorus. In a new study, researchers from the University of Minnesota used an ultrathin black phosphorus film—only 20 layers of atoms—to demonstrate high-speed data communication on nanoscale optical circuits.

The University of Minnesota announced Aug. 18 it has launched a first-of-its kind seed-investment program, the Discovery Capital Investment Program, to accelerate the transfer of university technology to the market by providing early-stage funding to startup companies based on university-discovered technology and innovation.
