Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has introduced its latest energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) solution, the ALTRACE spectrometer. Built for high-throughput environments, the ALTRACE provides accurate trace element detection from sodium to uranium using a high-energy 65 kV X-ray tube and proprietary high-count rate detector.

Reducing Workload While Improving Sensitivity

This new system significantly reduces the workload for lab managers and analysts by minimizing sample preparation. ALTRACE accommodates liquid, solid, and powder samples, eliminating the need for time-consuming digestion steps typical of AAS or ICP-OES methods.

Key benefits include:

  • Sub-ppm sensitivity even for heavy metals like cadmium and lead
  • Faster measurement throughput with automatic analysis of up to 48 samples
  • Precision analysis without needing to recreate calibration curves
  • Seamless scheduling adjustments during analysis

According to Shimadzu, eliminating the sample digestion process lowers costs and simplifies screening, while enabling precision analysis using the same sample.

Deeper Technical Advantages for Lab Managers

  • Enhanced sensitivity over previous models: Compared to the EDX-7200, ALTRACE improves detection limits by up to 80% for key heavy metals like Pb and Cd.
  • Automatic filter switching: Six filters (eight types) help improve signal-to-noise ratios and enable flexible targeting of different elemental ranges.
  • FP and background FP methods: These advanced quantification techniques reduce the need for standard samples and enable reliable matrix corrections.
  • Compatible with vacuum analysis: A dedicated vacuum measurement unit enhances sensitivity for light elements.

Versatility Across Sample Types and Applications

ALTRACE supports:

  • Direct analysis of solids, powders, liquids, and organic solvents
  • Both screening and precision analysis in food safety, soil testing, and chemical product quality control
  • Analysis of over 25 elements in soil and food matrices with high reproducibility.

Lab managers will appreciate that the autosampler’s drawer-style design allows sample additions even mid-run, helping avoid workflow interruptions.
