The MIT Press to Launch Open Access Journal Imaging Neuroscience
The former editorial teams of Neuroimage and Neuroimage: Reports will lead the new MIT Press journal
CAMBRIDGE, MA — The MIT Press announced that it will launch Imaging Neuroscience in summer 2023. Intended to become the premier journal in the field of neuroimaging, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief will be Dr. Stephen M. Smith, professor of biomedical engineering, Oxford University. He will be joined by the entire former editorial team from the journals Neuroimage and Neuroimage: Reports—a departure that has been hailed by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a “high-profile move . . . in the long-unfolding battle over who pays and who benefits in the academic-publishing world.”
“The entire editorship has moved over to start our new journal with MIT Press, and we’re extremely excited about this move—not least because it allows us to fix the problem of high publication fees to authors,” said Smith. “But more generally, it has been a delight to work with MIT Press on this—in part because they clearly have a much more ethical approach to academic publishing than we often see.”
“The outpouring of support from our community of authors, reviewers, and readers affirms this was the right decision, and we look forward to demonstrating the way forward in non-profit publishing, while maintaining the highest standards of rigor, scholarship, and service to our discipline,” continued Smith.
The focus of Imaging Neuroscience will be on imaging of the brain and spinal cord, in humans and other species, including neurophysiological and neuromodulation methods. The journal welcomes research that significantly contributes to the understanding of brain function, structure, and behavior through the application of neuroimaging, including major advances in brain imaging methods. It will publish original research articles, review papers, theoretical models of brain function, data resource papers, software toolbox papers, technical notes, and positions on controversial issues.

The journal has a provisional submission platform at janeway.imaging-neuroscience.org, which is now open for new submissions. Imaging Neuroscience will have an initial article processing charge of $1,600 with waivers for low and middle income countries, but the Press and editors are actively seeking funding to reduce the APC in future years.
