The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has quickly responded to the needs of its members as they weather the current economic storm. For professionals whose careers may have been affected by the economic recession, new resources were introduced today to offer practical and moral support.

The Job and Financial Security Resource Center provides on-line career support and financial guidance through its Employment Search and Security section and the Financial Security section.

The Job and Financial Security Resource Center provides on-line career support and financial guidance through its Employment Search and Security section and the Financial Security section.

Employment Search and Security offers nearly 100 resources that can help any professional search for employment, develop qualities beyond the technical competencies that are valued by employers and learn how to obtain employment rights and legal protections. The Financial Security section of the resource center marries three economic topics—long-term, short-term, and immediate financial actions. TMS members can gain access to information ranging from planning for life events to personal finance and contingency planning.

Also introduced today is Ask the Human Resources and Benefits Expert, a way for members to obtain confidential answers to questions about human resources and benefits. The novel feature enables members to e-mail questions that they might be uncomfortable asking at their workplace to the society’s human resources staff. To allow other members to benefit from these inquiries, generic versions of the questions and answers will be posted in the Job and Financial Security Resource Center with the identity and associations of the member who asked the question protected. The site also provides discussion forums and virtual networking opportunities for TMS members.

Having worked in the field of materials science and engineering as a core competency manager for materials design at Alcoa Technical Center in Upper Burrell, Pennsylvania, and later as an industry consultant for Aluminum Consultants Group in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, TMS Executive Director Warren H. Hunt Jr. knows the pressures a business can place on its employees during hard economic times. “Being in touch with many colleagues in this field, we recognized the significant economic pressures many of them are experiencing,” he said. “We really looked for ways as a professional society to help our members.”
