Drexel University is opening a new research institute that will strive to answer some of the most challenging questions about energy and environmental sustainability facing the nation today.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Two of the nation’s fastest supercomputers will aid a research team, led by a University of Alabama computational chemist, in guiding both the development of new nuclear fuels and clean-up efforts from past nuclear fuel and weapon production.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 17, 2013— If scientists can control cellular functions such as movement and development, they can cripple cells and pathogens that are causing disease in the body.

A University of Florida researcher has mapped the DNA genome of a new strain of citrus greening that could further threaten Florida’s beleaguered $9 billion citrus industry. Knowing the genetic makeup of the various strains is critical to finding a cure.

“See this thread? It’s made from maize starch.” Michaëla van Leeuwen, scientist at Applied Plant Research (PPO – part of Wageningen UR), points to a red thread coming from a small 3D printer. The device is one of the eye-catchers in the Bio-Based exhibition which is currently touring the Netherlands.
