Smile, Your Employees are Watching

My dogs are a great barometer when it comes to tension. At home, they don't have much to concern themselves about because my wife and I don't like to argue. But when we take them places where emotions can escalate, their behavior is a good indicator that the tension has reached an intolerable level. If dogs can be so affected by our moods and attitudes, think about the impact your disposition can have on your employees.

My dogs are a great barometer when it comes to tension. At home, they don't have much to concern themselves about because my wife and I don't like to argue. But when we take them places where emotions can escalate, their behavior is a good indicator that the tension has reached an intolerable level. By this point, they're in our laps, clinging as closely to us as possible.

If dogs can be so affected by our moods and attitudes, think about the impact your disposition can have on your employees. When you're noticeably unhappy, or even if you have a stern demeanor, your employees are going to notice. In all likelihood, they'll steer clear of you and go into survival mode.

I've been in offices where the mood was so ominous that I couldn't wait to escape.

Obviously, there are times when you'll be displeased at work, and it's going to show up on your face. But in general, it's good practice to let your employees see you smile. When you're smiling, it can only help elevate the mood and put people at ease. Smiles are also contagious.

There's great power in a smile. Sales people know this. Even over the phone, a seasoned sales person will consciously smile so that it's communicated in the tone of their voice. Not only can a smile impact others in a positive way, it can work inwardly as well. If you're in a bad mood, smiling can be a simple remedy.

So consider wearing a smile as a regular part of your wardrobe. Your employees will be buoyed by it, and you might even feel an increase sense of positivity yourself.
