New research reveals how the algae behind red tide thoroughly disables – but doesn’t kill – other species of algae. The study shows how chemical signaling between algae can trigger big changes in the marine ecosystem.

The Office of the Vice President for Research at Wayne State University announced today the finalization of a license agreement with a new start-up company, Detroit Materials, Inc., for a Wayne State University patented portfolio of high-strength low-alloy steels and cast irons for demanding applications in the defense, off-highway, tooling and automotive industries.

Neuroscience and cancer research added to statewide priorities: about $61 million awarded to URI since program began in 2001. Brown University, Rhode Island College, Providence College, Bryant University, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University and CCRI are partners in RI-INBRE program.

During the past few decades, the field of biology has dramatically expanded, incorporating many diverse sub-disciplines and specialty areas, such as microbiology and evolutionary biology. However, teaching biology to undergraduate students has not kept pace with the changes, and core biology curriculum varies widely from university to university and classroom to classroom.
