The core of every lab lies in the dedication, expertise, and leadership of its professionals—those who ensure smooth operations, inspire their teams, and drive innovation every day. To shine a spotlight on these unsung heroes of the lab, Lab Manager celebrated Lab Manager Appreciation Month in October 2024, sponsored by Corning.
As part of the campaign, Lab Manager encouraged readers to nominate a peer who demonstrates exceptional leadership in their labs.
After receiving many compelling nominations, three remarkable leaders were chosen for recognition: Andrew Ramsay, Nicole Shepherd, and Sushmitha Vallabh. These individuals exemplify the traits that make great laboratory leaders, from technical expertise to fostering collaborative environments. Let’s learn more about their inspiring journeys and contributions.
Andrew Ramsay – senior lab manager, Outpace Bio
Andrew Ramsay’s journey into laboratory leadership began with a degree in biochemistry from the University of Washington and a career that transitioned from biotech warehouse operations to the heart of research and development labs. Now a senior lab manager at Outpace Bio, Andrew oversees critical operations such as procurement, equipment maintenance, and environmental health and safety. He has been instrumental in designing and implementing processes that significantly enhance efficiency and support the scientific endeavors of his team.
Andrew’s leadership philosophy centers on communication, organization, and forward-thinking. He emphasizes the importance of open communication to build trust with his team and supports them by ensuring their needs are met. “A project for an entry-level member may be a very low priority project from the company’s perspective, but it may be that employee’s highest priority. When reviewing and checking in with them on the project, I want to give them my 100 percent and make sure they know that at the moment, it is my highest priority as well,” explains Andrew.
Andrew also excels in long-term planning, considering how current decisions will adapt to future changes, such as team growth or technological advancements.
During challenging times, Andrew leads by example, ensuring his team sees his commitment and dedication. “He communicates clearly, finds solutions to sticky problems, and is constantly looking for ways to save money and time,” shares Jen Running Deer, who nominated Andrew for Lab Manager Appreciation Month. “He organized a lab move last year that resulted in only a couple days of down time, which allowed the scientists to meet aggressive deadlines without missing a beat. He is the MVP of our ops team!”
Nicole Shepherd – environmental laboratory manager, Upper Guadalupe River Authority
With over a decade of experience in analytical sciences, Nicole Shepherd serves as the environmental laboratory manager at the Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA) as well as the lab’s lead technical director. Nicole ensures her lab provides high-quality data to customers while maintaining an exceptional level of operational efficiency.
Under Nicole’s leadership, UGRA has doubled its sample analysis capacity, thanks to her focus on cross-training and process optimization. Nicole credits her success to transparency, dedication to her team, and a customer-centric approach. She fosters an environment where team members feel supported and appreciated, hosting regular meetings to discuss challenges and strategize solutions.
Nicole draws motivation from the impactful role her lab plays in public health and environmental protection. “I have a strong dedication to help my customers receive exactly the information they need,” says Nicole. “I don’t hesitate to go out of my way to research their unique water quality concerns, so that we can be efficient with their time and money.”
Nicole’s passion and care for the lab’s customers was echoed by Tara Bushnoe, who submitted the nominated on behalf of Nicole. “Countless times per day, Nicole can be found talking with customers in person or on the phone to help them decide which tests will meet their needs [or] how to interpret their results,” explained Tara in her entry nominating Nicole. “…All of this is done while delivering high quality data and controlling costs.”
Sushmitha Vallabh – senior lab manager, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
Sushmitha Vallabh brings a wealth of expertise to her role as senior lab manager at the Ware Lab, part of the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego, California. With a Master’s degree in immunology from the University of Cincinnati, Sushmitha combines her scientific background with her leadership skills to oversee daily lab operations, ensure safety and compliance, and mentor new lab personnel.
Sushmitha’s approach to leadership is rooted in calm problem-solving and open communication. She believes in taking time to address conflicts rationally and values her team’s input when troubleshooting or optimizing protocols. Sushmitha also enforces rigorous training to ensure her team maintains high standards of lab practices.
“As a fellow lab manager, I have learned so much from her on how I can improve and better impact the overall health of my own lab,” boasts Zumi Alvarado, who nominated Sushmitha for the recognition. “I am beyond proud to know her and see all that she does for her lab and science as a whole.”
During stressful times, Sushmitha fosters a supportive environment, encouraging her team to lift each other’s spirits and collaborate on solutions. Her dedication to maintaining a well-trained, cohesive team has made her an exemplary leader in her organization. “Open communication is key in running a smooth lab,” says Sushmitha.
