The National Science Foundation has awarded the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves $14.5 million over a five-year period to create and operate a Physics Frontiers Center aimed at using radio timing observations of pulsars with the Green Bank Telescope and Arecibo Observatory to detect and study low-frequency gravitational waves.

The total volume of research at the University of Michigan was $1.31 billion in the fiscal year that closed June 30, 2014, just below the record high of $1.33 billion from the previous year.

A Washington University in St. Louis drug discovery program has received three grants totaling more than $5 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop new therapeutics for respiratory diseases. The target illnesses range from the common cold to life-threatening lung disease.

The flow of federal research funding to Brown University is only now starting to recover from the 2013 federal sequestration. As a result of the sequester, the total pool of research funds at the University decreased by 13.7 percent between 2013 and 2014, said Vice President for Research David Savitz, but funding for new research proposals in the first half of fiscal year 2015 is up significantly — about 30 percent — from 2014.

Stanford University announced Jan. 29 that it has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate efforts in vaccine development. The $50 million grant over 10 years will build on existing technology developed at Stanford and housed in the Human Immune Monitoring Core, and will establish the Stanford Human Systems Immunology Center. The center aims to better understand how the immune system can be harnessed to develop vaccines for the world's most deadly infectious diseases.

University of Saskatchewan researchers will share a total of $844,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for wide-ranging projects that will explore potential health benefits of using pulse crops in pet and fish feeds, energy-efficient technology for removing water from biofuels, catalysts to clean up air and water, and genetic and environmental factors underlying diseases such as cancer and osteoarthritis.
