The state of Rhode Island has adopted a plan facilitated by the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography to reduce the likelihood of human illness from the consumption of improperly handled oysters raised in aquaculture facilities in the state. The plan, created through a collaboration between shellfish management agencies and the aquaculture industry, went into effect on July 1.

Neuroscience and cancer research added to statewide priorities: about $61 million awarded to URI since program began in 2001. Brown University, Rhode Island College, Providence College, Bryant University, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University and CCRI are partners in RI-INBRE program.

Researchers from the University of Rhode Island are championing a recent breakthrough in the laboratory with hopes it could lead to a vaccine against the pathogen responsible for stomach cancer and to therapeutics for inflammatory diseases.
