The 2023 Lab Manager Leadership Summit promises to be a can’t-miss event for those looking to elevate their leadership and management skills within just a few days. This event offers the unique opportunity to surround yourself with colleagues from diverse scientific industries—including food/beverage, clinical, environmental, academic, government, and many other lab types—as well as distinguished experts in the fields of lab management, leadership, and safety.

Not your typical conference experience

The 2023 Leadership Summit will take place April 24-26 in College Park, MD. The three-day event kicks off with a day of lab tours and workshops on Monday, April 24. Attendees have the option to participate in a behind-the-scenes tour of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History’s Museum Support Center (MSC), the principal off-site conservation and collections storage facility for the Museum of Natural History’s irreplaceable collections. The tour will include a sneak peek into four different types of labs housed at the MSC, as well as the Biorepository, which has the capacity to store more than four million 2-millilter cryotubes containing tissue or DNA from all types of samples.

Two optional workshops will also be held on Monday. The first of which will focus on developing and nurturing a culture of safety within the lab, led by Jonathan Klane, senior safety editor at Lab Manager and EHS expert with 35 years of experience. Attendees will learn about risk assessment and mitigation, and will be grouped in teams to work through case scenarios and problem-solve.

The second workshop, hosted by Scott Hanton, editorial director at Lab Manager and former lab manager with three decades of experience, will provide a roadmap to effective hiring, onboarding, and staff development. Scott will demonstrate how to execute each step with confidence and provide examples to work through.

A welcoming cocktail social will wrap up the first day’s activities and allow for attendees to get to know each other before speaker sessions begin on Tuesday.

Educational program geared toward attendee participation

Featured topics on Tuesday, April 25, include engaging leadership, overcoming imposter syndrome, and inclusion and engagement where expert speakers will share their experiences and strategies. Lab Manager will also host an open panel discussion where three experts will field questions from the audience about their greatest management and leadership challenges. Finally, the winners of the 2023 Leadership Excellence Awards will be honored, followed by night two’s networking and social event.

The final day of the Leadership Summit will include sessions on reverse mentoring, change management and leading during crisis, and how the concept of “lessons learned” can be used to drive higher-performing teams and organizations.

Another new addition to the Leadership Summit agenda this year is roundtables. Each day, attendees are encouraged to join breakout sessions where Lab Manager moderators will enable intimate discussions on a specific topic. These roundtables will give attendees the chance to drive the conversation and learn directly from each other.

The roundtable topic options to choose from on Tuesday, April 25 will be:

  • Advocating for Investments
  • Convincing Staff to Adopt New Technologies

The roundtable topic options to choose from on Wednesday, April 26 will be:

  • Managing Difficult Situations
  • Tips to Hold Staff Accountable and Boost Team Performance

The Leadership Summit is Lab Manager’s flagship event and continues to receive rave reviews from attendees and sponsors each year. Whether you are a seasoned lab manager looking to refresh your skills or you are new to the role, this Summit will provide you with actionable takeaways to implement in your labs as soon as you return.
