Governor Deval Patrick and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) today announced over $100 million in grants for life-sciences-related capital projects in western Massachusetts, including $95 million for the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst and $5.5 million for the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute (PVLSI), a joint venture of Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and UMass Amherst.

Malvern Instruments Inc. has scored a decisive win in the final round of a long-running court battle waged by Wyatt Technology Corporation regarding the sale of Malvern’s Zetasizer Nano range in the US. Wyatt had alleged copyright infringement of software and other materials, false advertising and theft of trade secrets, and sought damages from Malvern in excess of $25 million (USD). However, Wyatt has ended up having to reimburse Malvern more than $2 million (USD) in respect of attorneys’ fees and costs.

The so called “patent dispute” relates to Biotage’s filing of opposition against certain patents of CEM in Europe* (Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain) and Japan, because Biotage believes that the patents as originally granted give CEM a broader protection than CEM is entitled to.

The Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) of the Faculty of Science at NUS has received a generous gift of S$1 million from Singapore Exchange Catalist-listed developer SingHaiyi Group Limited and its parent company, privately held Haiyi Holdings Pte Ltd. The donation will attract the prevailing matching grant from the Singapore Government.
